Placement Eligibility Criteria 2026 – Minimum CGPA, Backlog Rules and MNC Expectations
Placement season is coming and you are probably nervous. Will any company take me if my CGPA is 6.5? What if I have two backlogs? Can I still sit for placements? I have seen these questions many times. So let me give you straight answers based on real data from 2025-26 placement drives.
Minimum CGPA or Percentage – Company by Company
Every company has a cutoff. If you fall below that, your resume will not be shortlisted – even if you have done ten projects. Here is the real data from the last placement season.
| Company Type | Min CGPA (10-scale) | Min Percentage (approx) | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mass Recruiters (IT Services) | 6.0 – 6.5 | 57% – 62% | TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Cognizant, Capgemini |
| Mid-tier Product Companies | 7.0 – 7.5 | 66% – 71% | Adobe, Salesforce, SAP Labs, Goldman Sachs |
| FAANG / Top Product Companies | 7.5+ (often 8+) | 71% – 76%+ | Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Uber, Flipkart |
| Core Engineering (Mech/Civil/Electrical) | 6.0 – 7.0 | 60% – 66% | L&T, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Siemens |
| PSUs via GATE (IOCL, BPCL, NTPC) | 6.5 (no backlog in any sem) | 65% minimum | – |
Here is a real example. A friend of mine had 6.8 CGPA. He got calls from TCS and Infosys and was selected. But Amazon did not even let him take the online test because their cutoff was 7.5. So set your targets accordingly.
Backlogs – What is the Real Situation?
This is the biggest fear for many students. If you have an active backlog – meaning you have not cleared it yet – most companies will not allow you to sit for placements. There are a few exceptions.
- TCS NQT generally allows one active backlog? Actually the official rule says “no pending backlogs at the time of interview”. Some colleges relax this, but do not take the risk. Clear all backlogs before placement season starts.
- Infosys and Wipro are usually strict about “no active backlog”. If you have one backlog, it is rarely allowed.
- Mass recruiters mostly write “no active backlog”. Some allow one backlog only if you clear it before joining, but shortlisting becomes harder.
- Product companies like Amazon and Microsoft have zero tolerance. No backlogs at all.
Gap Year or Education Gap – How Much of a Problem?
Took a drop year for JEE preparation? A gap after 12th? Medical issues? Do not panic. Most companies allow up to two years of total gap, provided you can justify it. A medical certificate, proof of preparation, or a reasonable explanation works.
A real case from my college: a student took one year drop for JEE preparation, then did engineering. He had 7.2 CGPA. Both Infosys and Accenture shortlisted him. No one asked about the gap. But if you have more than two years of gap, companies like TCS and Infosys may be skeptical. PSUs generally allow gap but need a valid reason.
Subject-wise or Semester-wise Minimum Requirements
Some companies look at your performance in each semester, not just the overall CGPA. For example:
- L&T and Tata Motors require no backlog in any semester and a minimum of 55% in each semester.
- Infosys (for some roles) requires 60% in 10th, 12th, and graduation – all three. If you have 55% in 10th, you may be rejected.
- Amazon SDE wants 7.5+ CGPA overall, but they also look at grades in core CS subjects like Data Structures, Operating Systems, and DBMS separately.
These are filters on your resume. Try to maintain 60% in 10th and 12th, and keep each semester above 6.5 if possible.
What If You Do Not Meet the Eligibility?
Mass recruiters are still possible. Focus on coding aptitude and prepare specifically for TCS NQT or Infosys. If on-campus does not work, try off-campus – Accenture and Cognizant often take students with 6+.
First clear your backlogs. Then target companies that allow “maximum one backlog at the time of application but must clear before joining”.
Keep a certificate or affidavit ready. In the interview, confidently explain that you used that time for skill development, health reasons, or family issues.

Advice from Real Experience
- CGPA is only a filter. A student with 6.5 CGPA but good coding skills can get hired by mass recruiters. A student with 8 CGPA but weak coding may be rejected. So work on your skills alongside your grades.
- Do not lie on your resume. Some companies do background verification. If you write 7.5 but your actual CGPA is 6.9, your offer can be revoked.
- Off-campus eligibility is sometimes more flexible. If on-campus has a cutoff of 6.5, off-campus (like TCS NQT off-campus drive) may accept 6.0.
- Some PSUs like BHEL require 60% throughout with no backlogs at all. This is very strict.
